The Settlers of Catan

This research project evaluates the board game The Settlers of Catan (1995) as both a staple and a forgotten relic of board games based on whether it is being considered by casual or hobby gamers. Regardless of the game itself, it reflects and rejects common trends in the game industry and functions as a mirror for American capitalism, consumerism, and leisure. The research produced a paper published in “The Board Game Studies Journal” in 2020.

Future plans for this research include a book project centered on Catan and other pivotal games in the industry, including Ticket to Ride (2004) and Pandemic (2008).
